Cocoa Farming
Cocoa, Ghana, and Bayerebon

Chocolate is made from the beans inside Cocoa Pods. A large proportion of these are grown in Ghana by farmers living in small, remote villages. One of these villages is Bayerebon No3.

Many of the farmers in Bayerebon beling to the Kuapa Kokoo co-operative - an organisation which is owned and run by the farmers so all of the profits come back to their villages. Kuapa Kokoo owns about half of the shares in Divine Chocolate - a maker of fairtrade chocolate.

While FairTrade might only make up 2% of Kuapa's output, it is very important - the additional funds it raises goes straight to the communities where it provides schools, infrastructure like clean wells, and healthcare.
